Can Psychological Trauma Cause Blindness? A Real Case Study

Understanding Trauma-Induced Blindness

Psychological trauma can impact the body in powerful and unexpected ways. One rare but real condition is functional blindness—a type of vision loss that occurs without physical damage to the eyes or brain. This condition is classified under Conversion Disorder, also known as Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder.

Case Study – A Woman Blinded by Emotional Trauma:

  • Patient: Female, 32 years old

  • Diagnosis: Functional blindness due to psychological trauma

Presenting Problem:

The patient arrived at the emergency department the day after a violent assault by her partner. She awoke that morning unable to see. Medical evaluations, including MRI and CT scans, showed no damage to her optic nerves, eyes, or brain.

Psychological History:

  • Severe childhood trauma, including physical abuse

  • Recent domestic violence

  • Past diagnoses: PTSD, dissociation, and anxiety

During the traumatic episode, she reported a sensation of detachment—describing it as “watching the moment from outside my body.” Her blindness began shortly afterward.

Diagnosis: Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder:

After extensive neurological testing ruled out any physiological cause, the patient was diagnosed with Conversion Disorder, specifically trauma-induced blindness. Her mind had essentially “shut down” her visual input as a defense mechanism.

Treatment and Recovery

Her recovery included:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Medication for anxiety and depression

  • Ongoing trauma counseling and safety planning

Over several months, her vision gradually returned. After one year of intensive therapy, she fully regained her sight.

The Mind-Body Connection

This case is a powerful reminder of how deeply mental health and physical symptoms are connected. Psychological trauma can manifest in real, debilitating ways—even causing temporary blindness.
